My monkey series was born out of frustration over society’s preoccupation with beauty and gender standards. Many of my paintings were often greeted with comments about the size of the subjects body, whether they were male, female or, “beautiful”. I wondered if I took an iconic photo of Elliot Page and used the pose and wardrobe on a monkey, if the piece could avoid all of the stupid “ beauty “ and gender obsessed trappings that my paintings of people get. It turned out to be a successful social experiment and most of the comments were about the pieces as a whole, the application of paint and how interesting monkeys are.
